Shade & Light Contour Palette - Kat Von D

I purchased this goody at the Sephora in the Florida Mall when I was in Orlando in June. It cost me $46 (around about £29.9), so it is a fairly reasonable price for three powder contour colours and three highlight colours. Before I TOTALLY sell the product to you, I want you to know that Sephora online does ship to the United Kingdom, I think that the price varies on how much you purchase/cost of the order. But I do know that orders over £75 only costs £6 for delivery from the USA. It is totally worth it in my opinion - when you look at the products and brands which are Stateside only. Other brands which Sephora provide are - Becca, Anastasia Beverly Hills, Make-up Forever & obviously Sephora own brand products, which are absolutely fantastic and I spent most of the $270 on Sephora own brand products. No, they aren't expensive. I just went a wee bit mental and got overly excited!

Now, on to the actual palette review... I have never purchased anything from the Kat Von D makeup line before. But I knew I needed this palette. I was so jealous of all the American YouTubers and bloggers reviewing it and being able to hold it like a new born baby in their very own hands.

The three highlight colours which you get in this palette are lucid, lyric & levitation. The three contour colours are sombre, shadowplay & subconscious. The only negative thing about this palette is that i reckon two out of the three contour shades are 100% warm toned. Contour is usually cold/slightly grey to add the shadow effect, which is effectively what contour actually is - fake shadows on your face. Subconscious in my opinion is probably the most cool toned colour, and even that is a bit debatable. I can look past this and I don't actually mind contouring with warmer colours - but if you are deadly serious about a Kim Kadarshian contour look then maybe this palette isn't for you. I have to also say, that I haven't made much use of the three highlight shades, and that's because I just prefer highlighting with a more shimmery highlighter such as Soft & Gentle by M.A.C. But if you do like a seriously plain highlight which just lightens area of the face (like Kim Kadarshian, she'd be able to use one half of this palette), then the highlight options are beautiful. Do not get me wrong, I think that they swatch beautifully and the products were designed with love, it's just my personal preference.

Getting to know your colour can be quite tricky, but I have actually made use of all three colours in the palette, one for pale natural self, one for natural tan and one for fake tan. Not everybody would be able to use three, never mind two of these colours. So you have to ask yourself - is it worth £30 for a contour colour and a highlight colour? The answer to that question depends on if you are purchasing high end or drug store. You might end up being cheaper just buying this palette even if you are only going to use the two colours.

The contour colours have the appropriate highlight tones above them in the palette, but this is not a strict rule and you can mix and match if you feel like you have to - it can still look just as good in my opinion.

I do not think that this palette is for makeup beginners, as it can be quite hard to work with - purely because the powders are so pigmented that things can go very wrong, very quickly. I would like to say I learned the hard way, but I've made the very same mistake about 5 times and ended up looking a bit like a zebra with dark stripes all over my face.

The packaging is very Kat Von D. Black and sleek. Nothing too over the top, it is very clear to read. This is the little box that the palette comes in, but the actual palette itself is pretty much the same design - just a little bit cleaner than my box! It is a trooper though, it has been on two flights from Florida to New York and New York back to Edinburgh.

The three highlight colours (L-R): Lucid - a pale pinky tone, Lyric - a more bronze, gold tone highlighter, Levitation - darker more peachy tone.

The three contour colours (L-R): Subconcious - the lightest of the contour colours, the one which features the grey undertones, in my opinion it is a proper contour shade. Shadowplay - slightly warmer undertones, but in no means is it a cool undertone, medium in the palette in terms of colour. Sombre is the darkest and warmest shade, almost matte bronzer like. It can still easily be used to contour.

All colours, contour and highlight are matte and feature absolutely no shimmer (as I said above, I prefer shimmery highlighter, but adore matte bronzers for contour). Overall I think this product is an absolutely amazing buy and I'm jealous of America having this product at their local mall/shopping centre. It will be a sad day when I finish this up and some how just HAVE to spend another £75 on Sephora to get it delivered... (total sarcasm, I could easily buy £750 worth of makeup, laugh at myself and exit the webpage).

What are your favourite contour palettes? Have you tried this out? If so - do you love it as much as I do?

Recently I have already done a contour post - which was before I bought this palette, I still love my Clinique contour stick. You can check out that blog post here. Thank you for taking the time to read. xox
